Sensex ends 255 points down on global cues; Axis Bank slumps 7.8 pct after 83 pct decline in net profit for the July-September quarter

Indian shares ended lower on Wednesday, dragged down by financial stocks after Axis Bank reported slump in quarterly net profit on Tuesday.
 
The Nifty closed 0.88 percent lower at 8,615.25 after falling 1.09 percent earlier in the session.
 
The Sensex ended 0.91 percent down at 27,836.51 after slumping as much as 1.18 percent earlier. Both the indexes recorded their biggest intra-day fall since Oct. 13.
 
In the 50-share index, Idea Cellular, Kotak Mahindra Bank, Hero MotoCorp, Bharti Airtel and Maruti Suzuki gained between 1.44 per cent and 4.13 per cent. On the other hand, Axis Bank, Tata Motors DVR, Tata Steel, Tata Motors and ICICI Bank slipped between 3.69 per cent and 8.20 per cent.
